When you see a restaurant menu or advertisement, the food photos highlight the unique qualities of the dishes that make them irresistible to the senses. Behind those photos lies a great deal of preparation, both technical and stylistic. It's about capturing the precise moment, the textures of the food, and the combination of colors and shapes, both of the food itself and other elements. It's a true art, combining all these factors so that just by looking at the photo, our digestive system kicks into gear, and we start drooling! Today we're giving you some tips for taking delicious and mouthwatering photos.

Where to begin?

Undoubtedly, the chef's work is fundamental here. But capturing a photo that makes you want to eat is the photographer's job. Framing and lighting are two very important aspects. If this is your first time doing this type of food photography, you should practice and develop your visual skills. Follow renowned food photographers and look for inspiration in professional work. Training your eye by studying expert work is a great way to start your own career.

Some tricks for food photography

Below we will list some expert tips to help your food photography improve and become exquisite to the palate.

  1. The light

lights and shadows

It's one of the most important factors. Adding drama to the scene with the use of light and shadow will make the volumes and textures of the food stand out. You can use natural light from a window as an alternative.

  1. Lightly cooked vegetables

It's important that the vegetables look good. They should appear firm and retain their color. If they're overcooked, they'll look unappealing and will have lost some of their natural color.

  1. Different angles

angles

Experiment with each dish, trying different angles. A new angle can be very interesting in this type of photography, highlighting one element in particular and leaving others in the background.

  1. Motion capture

motion

Movement can be very interesting, adding dynamism to a photo that might otherwise be static, like a drink or dough. Try photographing a drink being poured or flour being added to dough. The results can be spectacular.

  1. Capture quickly

quickly

What does this mean? It means that food spoils quickly, losing texture or some other interesting characteristic. You need to capture your photos as quickly as possible. Think of a steaming plate, or ice cream.

  1. Depth

depth

Decide which elements of the dish you want to highlight and place them in the foreground, leaving the others in the background. If you have a steak with a side dish, it might be more interesting to emphasize the steak and leave the other elements blurred in the background. You can also use color to decide which elements to place in the foreground or background; generally, warm colors are more appealing in the foreground.

  1. Clean compositions

Small portions of food in clean compositions are more appealing to the human eye. Don't overdo it with too many elements.

  1. Watch out for the perspective

eye perspective

While it's advisable to experiment with different angles, in many cases photographing from a point close to the dish and as close as possible will give a sense of realism that can be very appealing for food photography.

  1. Use elements that add meaning

items

Depending on the type of restaurant or the type of food you're photographing, you can add different elements to your compositions to enhance your photos. Paper and wood add warmth and authenticity. Designer tableware can bring sophistication, or simplicity. Keep in mind that everything included in the frame adds value to the photograph.

With these tips and notes, you now have a good starting point for food photography. You'll be able to delight and whet the appetites of everyone who admires your photos. All that's left is to start practicing.
