Focus Check. Ensures the sharpness of your optics.
Get answers about your camera lens's performance. At DST Photography, we evaluate resolution, contrast, and offset using the best tools.
The loss of resolution is not always obvious
After a blow, a target may appear to focus well in the center, but suffer optical decentration, This causes critical blurring and edge aberrations. Swipe to see the difference between a miscalibrated lens and one in perfect condition.
Why do our clients request a Focus Check?
There are times and circumstances in the life of your equipment where a small check-up can save you from serious breakdowns in the future or avoid expenses on defective material.
1. Second-hand purchases
Are you buying an optics device from a private seller and want to know if it performs as it should? Our analysis ensures you don't buy internally damaged equipment.
2. Impacts and Falls
At first glance and from the outside the lenses may appear intact, but a slight bump can misalign the helical guides or the guides that support the optical group.
3. Loss of Contrast
With wear and tear from time, heavy use, and misalignment, many optics lose their native ability to deliver contrast and resolution.
4. Chromatic Aberrations
A classic symptom of problems in the coatings or collimation of the aspheric block, which generates very aggressive magenta or green halos in high contrast contours.
5. Peripheral Soft Focus
If the image is focused in the center but one side (left or right) always comes out blurry or foggy, you have a clear problem with optical decentering.
6. No-Obligation Quote
The purpose of the Focus Check is to identify the problem. If we find one, we'll provide you with a report and an official repair estimate, which you are free to accept or decline.
Our diagnostic technology
To empirically verify these defects, simply going out to take some photos is not enough. At DST Photography's laboratories, we have calibration equipment specially designed for lenses and focusing systems.
Optical Collimator
We have a high-precision optical collimator in our facilities. This instrument projects and captures the optical axis of the lens, revealing even the slightest deviation, focal plane deficiency, or error in the internal mechanical axes of your lens barrel. It is the ultimate tool for verifying focus.
Resolution Project
To quantify the actual optical loss, we use photographic optical resolution projectors. These generate matrices and charts with millimeter-scale micropatterns (modulation charts or MTFs). This allows us to evaluate the lens's optical resolution across the entire frame.
Frequently asked questions about Focus Check
We respond to some of the most frequent requests from photographers regarding our check-up and diagnostic service.
How much does this service cost and how long does it take?
The service has a fixed cost of €15 per optician (regardless of the fault to be detected). Once the optics arrives in our hands from the courier agency (or you leave them at the counter), we will process the Focus Check within a range of 24 to 48 hours and we will inform you of the result.
What happens if you confirm that my target is wrong?
If during the process using the collimator and the resolution projector we discover any noticeable defects (play in guides, displaced lenses, broken mechanisms), we will... We will send you an official report and estimate for the repairs.. Of course, this quote is non-binding. If you decline it, you simply pay the original €15 service fee and you can pick up (or we can ship) the optician.
Do you calibrate the front-focus and back-focus using USB profiles or firmware?
Yes, of course. We are competent to perform AF micro-adjustments both at the computer level on modern lenses at their motherboard, and by performing a mechanical disassembly to lubricate and physically readjust the stabilizer mechanism or focus ring on older models.
Okay, I want to send you my optician's. How do I do that?
It's very simple. Visit our page Secure Shipping. We at technical service will manage a shipping label so that the courier can pick up the item from your home or workplace quickly, securely and transparently.
Enjoy your equipment in perfect condition
Discard existential doubts, stop wondering why that 85mm portrait came out slightly "soft" and invest €15 in the absolute peace of mind that comes with a diagnosis of the highest technical level.
Comprehensive Optical Evaluation: Performance of lenses in a Technical Laboratory
Micro camera shake, recurring loss of focus, or washed-out images can wreak irreparable havoc on a professional commission. Beyond diminishing the perceived artistic quality for a photographer, these flaws often mask a broader problem. optical decentration motivated by mechanical mishaps not visible but evident in the optical resolution capture.
To address this scenario, at DST Photography we incorporate stationary hardware such as optical collimators and optical resolution projectors, Unique pieces of equipment that go beyond simple manual photography to provide objective and quantitative evidence regarding performance. This analytical effort is called service Focus Check It not only guarantees fault checks for lenses from the second-hand market, but also opens the way to physical and software recalibration for many manufacturers such as Canon, Sony, Nikon, Olympus, Fujifilm, Sigma or Tamron, preventing replacement costs that sometimes exceed thousands of euros.
