Sports photography is one of the greatest challenges a photographer can face. Many sports are fast-paced and quite unpredictable, hence the difficulty, and we often feel a certain frustration when reviewing the images we've captured after a sporting event. Today we'll give you some tips to help you start mastering sports photography.

Speed and fluidity.

You'll need to anticipate the athletes' movements; it's advisable to keep changing positions, seeking new perspectives and angles, and to follow every second in great detail. The most exciting moment can appear and vanish in a single second. So, we recommend being as quick as possible and anticipating the athletes' future movements as much as you can.

Don't forget the law of the gaze

Composition is one of the most fundamental elements of photography, whether sports or any other kind. We know that sports photography carries the challenge of speed, which sometimes leads us to neglect other essential aspects, such as the rule of gaze. This compositional rule reminds us that there must be space in front of the subject or object being photographed, in the direction they are moving or the side they are looking towards.

The two-thirds rule

We must remember that for a good composition, we should avoid placing the main subject or person in the center of the frame. Often, the element placed directly in the center of the image ends up losing all its vitality.

Be careful with depth of field

If our goal is to emphasize the action, we should downplay the background. Therefore, we must keep in mind that a large depth of field might not be beneficial for the shot we want to take.

Typically, a shallow depth of field is used, opening the aperture as wide as possible, thus minimizing the importance of the background in the photograph.

You should keep in mind that if you want to photograph people on different planes, you will have to play with the depth of field.

Burst firing and sweeps

A great way to photograph movement is by using panning shots; the sensation of motion is perfectly captured in the photograph. Alternatively, if you want to freeze the image, you can use burst mode, which allows you to take many photos.

Use appropriate goals

If you're thinking sports photography is for you, you should know that you need a long focal length lens, at least 200mm. That's essentially a telephoto lens.

Use the image stabilizer

It's advisable that the lens has image stabilization. We know it's not a miracle cure for blurry photos, but it helps reduce motion blur. This is especially important when using long focal lengths.
